Psalms 48

Zion Exalted

1A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

The Lord is great and highly praised
in the city of our God. a
His holy mountain,
2 rising splendidly,
is the joy of the whole earth.
Mount
Zion: Originally a term for the fortified section of Jerusalem and then, by extension, used for the temple and the city of Jerusalem both in the present time and in the future
Zion on the slopes of the north
is the city of the great King. c
3 God is known as a stronghold
in its citadels. d

4 Look! The kings assembled;
they advanced together. e
5 They looked and froze with fear;
they fled in terror. f
6 Trembling seized them there,
agony like that of a woman in labor, g
7 as You wrecked the ships of Tarshish
with the east wind. h

8 Just as we heard, so we have seen
in the city of
Yahweh/Yah: Or The Lord; the personal name of God in Hebrew; "Yah" is the shortened form of the name.
Yahweh of
Hosts/hosts: Military forces consisting of God's angels, sometimes including the sun, moon, and stars, and occasionally, Israel
Hosts,
in the city of our God;
God will establish it forever. k ,
Selah: A Hebrew word whose meaning is uncertain; various interpretations include: (1) a musical notation, (2) a pause for silence, (3) a signal for worshipers to fall prostrate on the ground, (4) a term for the worshipers to call out, and (5) a word meaning "forever"

Selah

9 God, within Your temple,
we contemplate Your faithful love. m
10 Your name, God, like Your praise,
reaches to the ends of the earth; n
Your right hand is filled with justice. o
11 Mount Zion is glad.
The towns
Lit daughters
of Judah rejoice
because of Your judgments. q

12 Go around Zion, encircle it;
count its towers,
13 note its ramparts; tour its citadels
so that you can tell a future generation: r
14 “This God, our God forever and ever
He will always lead us.”
